Homework 2: INDUSTRY: Magazines

InStyle Magazine

InStyle magazine is a publication of IPC Media which is based in London and is printed near St Ives, Plymouth. IPC Media also own magazines such as 'Look', 'Loaded', 'Wallpaper' and 'NME'. These three magazines are extremely popular magazines with all types of audiences ranging from high street shoppaholics to music loving rockers to interior decorators. IPC Media is the leading consumer magazine publisher in the UK. Almost every two in 3 UK women and 44% of men read an IPC magazine.

Throughout the magazine there are many advertisements, most of them taking up a whole page. The effect of this is that the audience can't get away from the adverts over every page they turn, plus the companies that are advertising there product pay the magazine money to put there advertisement in the magazine, therefore resulting in more money for the publishers.

The main audience of the magazine would most likely be young to middle aged woman. I can tell this because of the content of the magazine. 'InStyle' isn't a very trashy magazine, it advertises expensive clothing and jewellery therefore appealing to those readers with more money that those who read magazines like 'heat' and 'Closer'. The position of this magazine on the shelf would be with the magazines like 'Glamour' and 'Company' because of its sophisticated front cover. The still on the front of the magazine is a shot that has been done in a photoshoot specifically for the magazine. This signifies that the magazine can afford to do photoshoots in order to get an image for the cover instead of using a paparazzi shot from the streets.
